Online or in-person yoga classes: which suits you best
Advantages, limitations and how to make the most of each format, drawn from teaching in both since 2020.
Since 2020, online classes have gone from being an emergency alternative to a way of practising in their own right. If you're torn between the two formats, here's what's worth knowing.
Benefits of in-person classes
- More precise adjustments and corrections, especially when you're starting out.
- A dedicated space, free from the distractions of home.
- The energy of the group and the bond with other students.
- Equipment to hand (blocks, straps, weights).
Benefits of live online classes
- You practise from home or wherever you are, even when travelling.
- You save on travel and it's easier to stay consistent.
- With small groups and cameras on, the teacher sees you and corrects you.
- Ideal for pregnant women, new mums or weeks when time is short.
How to make the most of online
- Position your camera so your whole body is visible, side-on if possible.
- Clear a space of about 2 x 2 metres.
- Keep a mat, two cushions or blocks and a strap (a belt works) to hand.
- Silence notifications: this time is yours.
Combining both formats
One in-person session to learn and refine technique and one or two online to keep up the practice is a combination that works really well. Laura's students have been practising this way since 2020, and many highlight how connected it feels “even though it's online”.
Yoga at INNER: in person and online
INNER offers in-person sessions in Sarrià, Sant Gervasi and Pedralbes (Barcelona) and live online sessions, one-to-one or in small groups.
Frequently asked questions
Are online yoga classes just as effective?
For most people, yes, as long as they're live, in small groups and with a teacher who corrects you. If you're starting from scratch, a few in-person sessions help you learn the basics.
What do I need for an online class?
A mat, a clear space, a device with a camera and a good connection. Optional equipment: blocks or cushions and a strap.
Can I start online yoga with no experience?
Yes, if the class is for beginners and the teacher can see you. Mention your experience and any discomfort before you start.
